WELCOME TO 2ND LT WALTER D ELHERS MEMORIAL_BREA

2LT Walter D. Ehlers Memorial Post
Proud to be the official Memorial Post for Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Walter D. Ehlers, VFW Post 5384, incorporated in 1952, has been serving local veteran communities for over 75 years.  With the consolidations with the Yorba Linda Post a few years ago and recently with Buena Park, these communities officially include Brea, Yorba Linda, Buena Park, Cypress, Fullerton, La Palma and Stanton.

As yesterday's defenders of freedom, we want to welcome today's military service members into our ranks to become part of our elite group.  Our common bond is the battlefield, whether it is service in Vietnam, Korea, the Persian Gulf, Kosovo, the war on terrorism or any other peace-keeping/expeditionary campaigns. Your courage and sacrifice have made a difference in preserving and defending world peace.

OUR MISSION

That the purpose of this Corporation shall be fraternal, patriotic, historical, charitable, and educational: to preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members; to assist worthy comrades; to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead; and to assist their widows and orphans; to maintain true allegiance to the Government of the United States of America, and fidelity to its Constitution and laws; to foster true patriotism; to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, and to preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies.

2024 Voice of Democracy - Brea

Please join us in congratulating this year's recipient of the Post 5384's Voice of Democracy award: Reena Kim!

This year was a very close competition, with only a very few points separating the top submissions.  After careful review and judging in compliance with the official criteria, Reena was declared our official 2024 winner!  Congratulations to Reena and all of the contestants.

Reena was presented with a $100 check, certificate and her submission was forwarded up to District 2 for the next level of competition.

Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Each year, nearly 57,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is, Is America Today our Forefathers' Vision?

Wreaths Across America 2024

North Orange County 2LT Walter D. Ehlers Memorial VFW Post 5384 is proud to yet again support the Wreaths Across America effort this December.  Thanks to our very own Jim Tucker for organizing this event in our area.  Thank you also to all of the Post members and others who showed up at the Brea Memorial Gardens to conduct a ceremony and place wreaths on veterans' graves.

Wheelchair Ramp Project

Ramp for decorated Veteran Kenny Bouche

The project has finally been completed!

As some of you may know, over the past few months, our own Past Adjutant Jim Clark has been organizing the building of a wheelchair ramp with local church organizations and Home Depot to assist our comrade Kenny Bouche and his wife.  Kenny is a decorated Vietnam era warrior who was a member of the 1st Calvary Regiment during the events featured in the book Search and Destroy by Keith Nolan.

Thank you to Home Depot and all the volunteers as well as Jim Clark for completing this project.

Post Consolidation and Name Change

It's Official!

Ehlers Memorial Post No. 8954, Buena Park as of Sept. 6th, 2023. Our new post name is officially:

North Orange County
2LT Walter D. Ehlers Memorial Post No. 5384

With the consolidations with the Yorba Linda Post a few years ago and recently with Buena Park, the communities officially include Brea, Yorba Linda, Buena Park, Cypress, Fullerton, La Palma and Stanton.

Additionally, we are also proud to be the official VFW Memorial Post for Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Walter D. Ehlers.

We are excited to welcome our comrades from Post 8954 into the Post 5384 family and look forward to serving these expanded communities of veterans.

PACT Act Passes!

For Vets exposed to burn pits and toxic substances

The VFW worked tirelessly to champion the PACT Act and secure this life-changing legislation FOR VETERANS!

The PACT Act is a law that expands VA health care and benefits for veterans and veteran's survivors exposed to toxic substances from burn pits, contaminated drinking water at Camp Lejeune and other sources.

The PACT Act advances a top priority of the VA and the VFW —
getting more veterans into VA care.

Three new categories of veterans will be phased into receiving hospital care, medical services and nursing home care.  In some cases, VA may contact survivors who were previously denied VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (VA DIC) benefits. You do not need to wait for VA to contact you to submit a claim though.

If you or a loved one experienced toxic exposure while serving in the military, we urge you to answer a few quick questions regarding your service and get referred to a VFW Accredited Service Officer. Please note that with the PACT Act, many predatory organizations have appeared and are charging exorbitant fees for their services. The VFW has never and will never charge for our services as it is our mission to ensure that every veteran receives the benefits they earned.

IN-COUNTRY

A satirical reflection by Author/Artist Phil Fehrenbacher

Phil enlisted in the Army in 1965 where you served for years in Vietnam.  He became a graphic designer and has worked for the state of Oregon for 26 years.  He retired in 2003 and started the Cartoon "In-Country".  The cartoons reflect his experiences during his tour of duty in South Vietnam.
